  2. We noticed that in this book Esperanza talks about women looking out of windows a lot, about them being trapped inside their house by their husband or their kid or their family. She talks about them like she doesn’t want to be like them, “And the story goes she never forgave him. She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow” (p.11). She talks about seeing many women she has known get married and carried off by their husbands and then sit by the window for the rest of their lives. She talks about how sad they seem, watching the world pass by but not being able to go out and live in it. She talks about how they are trapped, and how she doesn’t want to be trapped. She wants to be her own person, not like her grandmother, not like sally, she wants to be herself.

  3. We think that this book was written with weird grammar. For example when people talk there are no quotation marks, but instead there is one line to each sentence spoken by somebody. Because of the strong metaphors when I talked to my group we all agreed that we had to reread all lot of phrases sometimes even whole pages. Samantha and I talked about the chapter called “Sally”, in this chapter, we meet a new character who is called Sally. We thought that it seems like Sally is sad and has no friends but only fake friends that talk about her behind her back. Samantha thought that Sally is held back by her self consciousness and she always worries about who likes her, “And you could laugh, Sally. You could go to sleep and wake up and never have to think who likes and doesn’t like you.” (p.83)

The chapter talks about how Sally plays a little game with the boys of the neighborhood. The boys take her keys and in order to get them back she has to kiss the boys. We learned in our class about sexual harassment that this is a sort of sexual harassment. I think that Sally is like a lot of girls: she likes the attention so she doesn’t mind what they are doing. Esperanza realizes that what they are trying to do, and decides to tell one of the boys (Tito) mother. The mother doesn’t care, she doesn’t see what she can do to stop it. In this chapter, the author also gives hints that Esperanza is getting a bit suicidal. She says something about wanting to die at a certain place and that she tried once.
